Working with The Vermont Standard has always been a treat – they’re a local newspaper with the tenacity to push the limits. In this instance the publisher was wrestling with how to provide value to users on the web without completely devaluing the printed paper. While most papers use a standard blog format monetized both by advertisements and some form of subscription, the Standard wanted to offer something unique. Each week as stories happen they’re added to the site, but come down after the paper is published, almost like Snapchat for the news!

We got to work designing the overall layout, and of course the logic necessary to power the headline automation. The end result was a news website with a full-screen hero slider that progresses through each major story with links to the more “standard” scrollable feed of stories that won best overall website in the 2019 New England Better Newspaper Competition!
